What it is: The iPad Pro and Apple Pencil give certain users new capabilities not found in previous tablets.
There’s no question that the iPad redefined the tablet market and killed the netbook at the same time. While the iPad and later iPad mini helped shape the tablet market, both were fairly limited. Although you can easily create content, both the iPad and iPad mini are more suitable for consuming content.
That all changed with the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil. The iPad Pro is just a larger iPad but the Apple Pencil combined with the iPad Pro offer new capabilities for drawing. If you’re an artist, you may find that an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil give you new features that you never had before in much the same way that the original iPad gave people new features they never had before.
Dutch artist Leendert Jan Vis creates cheerful and quirky animals that have appeared on over 250 million greeting cards as well as in picture books, as stuffed animals, and on a variety of products. Like most artists, Vis has relied on pen and ink despite many other artist using a Mac or Windows PC with a Wacom’s graphic tablet or Cintiq pen-enabled display. But after trying the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, Vis has ditched pen and ink completely.
“I love art that has the feel as if it is spontaneous and not completely overdone until it is perfect—which you won’t reach if you go for perfection,” he says. “It will lose the raw feeling. Which I think is very attractive.”
The iPad Pro and Pencil let him preserve that feel of spontaneity even more than his traditional tools did. “Nowadays, I don’t have to trace my first sketches or scan them. I work straight away on the iPad Pro, and it does the trick for me.”
While not everyone needs an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, many people find that this combination gives them new powers that they never had before. For graphic artists, an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil can be a combination you can literally change the way you work. For non artists, the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil may not be a necessity but a curious and interesting accessory.
No matter what your needs might be, the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil have truly revolutionized the way some people work. To read more about how one artist relies exclusively on an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, click here.
